Crochet Festive Striped Elf Hat with Braided Tails Free Pattern
Materials
- Chunky yarn in red, green, and beige
- 9mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- hdc = half double crochet
Pattern
Hat Base
- Start: With red yarn, make a magic ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc in ring. (6 sts)
- Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Round 3: [1 sc, 2 sc in next st] repeat around. (18 sts)
- Rounds 4-6: Continue increasing, alternating colors between red and green every two rounds, until you reach 48 sts.
- Rounds 7-20: Work in hdc, maintaining stripe pattern, until the hat measures approximately 14 inches.
Ear Flaps
- With Beige: Identify 10 front-center sts.
- Attach yarn, and work 10 sc across the chosen sts.
- Decrease 1 st each row by working 2 sts together, for 4 rows.
- Fasten off, and repeat on opposite side for second ear.
Ears
- With Beige: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (7 sts)
- Work 2 sc in last st, turn and sc back down the opposite side of chain.
- Continue working in spiral, increasing at each end for a total of 5 rounds.
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail, and sew each ear to the base of each ear flap.
Braided Tails
- Cut six 24-inch lengths of red, green, and beige yarn.
- Attach three colors to the end of each ear flap, braid loosely, and secure with a knot.
- Repeat on opposite ear flap.
Finishing
- Weave in all ends using a yarn needle.
- Adjust braids and ears to your liking.
