Materials Needed:

• Worsted weight yarn in black and brown
• Size G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook

Abbreviations:

• sc: single crochet
• hdc: half double crochet
• dc: double crochet
• sl st: slip stitch

Instructions:

Top Hat Crown

1. With brown yarn, create a magic ring.
2. Round 1: Work 6 sc in the ring. Join with sl st to the first sc. (6 sc)
3. Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (12 sc)
4. Round 3: Ch 1, (1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (18 sc)
5. Round 4: Ch 1, (1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (24 sc)
6. Continue increasing in this manner for rounds 5-10, adding one more single crochet between increases each round. Switch to black yarn in the last stitch of round 10.
7. Rounds 11-30: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join.

Hat Brim

1. Round 31: With black yarn, ch 1, (sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (42 sc)
2. Round 32: Ch 1, (sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. Join.
3. Round 33: Work one round of hdc in each stitch around.

Herringbone Band

1. Using brown yarn, ch 80 (or length around base of crown plus a bit extra for overlap).
2. Row 1: Turn, hdc in second ch from hook and in each ch across.
3. Rows 2-5: Ch 1, hdc in each st across.
4. Fasten off and sew band around the base of the crown.

Butterfly Embellishment

1. With brown yarn, create a magic ring.
2. Round 1: Work 6 sc in ring. Join.
3. Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join.
4. Rnd 3 onwards: Alternate between dc and sc to form wing shapes, adjusting based on desired size and shape.
5. Sew the butterfly to the band.
