Crochet Elegant Steampunk Butterfly Top Hat Free Pattern
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn in black and brown
- Size G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Iron-on button embellishment
Gauge:
10 sc x 10 rows = 2 inches
Abbreviations:
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- ch: chain
Instructions:
Top Hat Crown
- With brown yarn, create a magic ring.
- Round 1: Work 6 sc in the ring. Join with sl st to the first sc. (6 sc)
- Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (12 sc)
- Round 3: Ch 1, (1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (18 sc)
- Round 4: Ch 1, (1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (24 sc)
- Continue increasing in this manner for rounds 5-10, adding one more single crochet between increases each round. Switch to black yarn in the last stitch of round 10.
- Rounds 11-30: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join.
Hat Brim
- Round 31: With black yarn, ch 1, (sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (42 sc)
- Round 32: Ch 1, (sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. Join.
- Round 33: Work one round of hdc in each stitch around.
Herringbone Band
- Using brown yarn, ch 80 (or length around base of crown plus a bit extra for overlap).
- Row 1: Turn, hdc in second ch from hook and in each ch across.
- Rows 2-5: Ch 1, hdc in each st across.
- Fasten off and sew band around the base of the crown.
Butterfly Embellishment
- With brown yarn, create a magic ring.
- Round 1: Work 6 sc in ring. Join.
- Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join.
- Rnd 3 onwards: Alternate between dc and sc to form wing shapes, adjusting based on desired size and shape.
- Sew the butterfly to the band.
Attach an iron-on button embellishment to the center of the band as shown in the reference picture. Weave in all ends.
Your top hat is complete!
