Cozy Chunky Knit Sweater

Materials

  • 8 skeins of bulky weight yarn (approximately 100 yards each) in mustard yellow
  • Size 15 (10 mm) circular knitting needles (32 inches long)
  • Size 15 (10 mm) double-pointed needles (for sleeves)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

12 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Instructions

Body of the Sweater

  1. CO 70 stitches.
  2. Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 5 inches for the hem.
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every row) and knit until the piece measures 24 inches from the cast-on edge, ending on a knit row.
  4. Next, divide the stitches for the armhole: K20, place next 30 stitches on a holder for the front, K20.

Back of the Sweater

  1. Continue knitting the back until it measures the same as the front, ending with a purl row.
  2. Bind off the stitches on the back as follows: K20, bind off next 30 stitches, K20.
  3. To create the turtleneck, CO 20 stitches separately, then join to the circular needle. Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 10 inches.
  4. Bind off in ribbing and sew the turtleneck to the main piece.

Sleeves

  1. Using the double-pointed needles, pick up 20 stitches from the armhole on one side.
  2. Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 5 inches.
  3. Switch to stockinette stitch and continue until the sleeve measures 18 inches from the cast-on edge, decreasing 2 stitches each side after 10 inches for a tapered sleeve.
  4. Bind off the sleeve stitches. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
  2. Block the sweater to measurements to ensure the shape and size are correct.
  3. Your cozy chunky knit sweater is now ready to wear!
