Knitting Striped Lace Detail Ankle Socks Free Pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Light DK weight yarn in three colors: light blue, terracotta, and cream
  • Set of 4 double-pointed needles (DPNs) – Size US 2 (2.75 mm)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Stitch markers

Gauge:

28 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Abbreviations:

  • CO: Cast On
  • k: Knit
  • p: Purl
  • yo: Yarn Over
  • k2tog: Knit Two Together
  • ssk: Slip, Slip, Knit
  • rep: Repeat

Instructions:

Cuff:

  1. CO 48 stitches with light blue yarn, distribute evenly across 3 DPNs, and join to knit in the round.
  2. Rounds 1-10: (k2, p2) rep around for 10 rounds.

Leg:

  1. Switch to terracotta yarn.
  2. Round 1: Knit all stitches.
  3. Round 2: (yo, k2tog) rep around.
  4. Rounds 3-6: Knit all stitches.
  5. Switch to cream yarn and repeat Rounds 1-6.
  6. Repeat the sequence switching between light blue, terracotta, and cream until desired leg length, ending with a lace round.

Heel Flap:

  1. With cream yarn, knit across half of the stitches for the heel flap (24 stitches).
  2. Work back and forth in rows:
  3. Row 1: (Sl1, k1) across.
  4. Row 2: Sl1, purl across.
  5. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for a total of 20 rows.

Turn Heel:

  1. Continue with cream yarn.
  2. Row 1: Sl1, k13, ssk, k1, turn.
  3. Row 2: Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
  4. Row 3: Sl1, k6, ssk, k1, turn.
  5. Row 4: Sl1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn.
  6. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches are turned.

Gusset:

  1. With terracotta yarn, pick up and knit 10 stitches along the side of the heel flap, knit across the instep stitches in pattern, and pick up and knit 10 stitches along the other side of the heel flap.
  2. Continue in the round, decreasing the gusset stitches as follows:
  3. Round 1: (Knit to 3 stitches before end of needle, k2tog, k1), knit across instep stitches, (k1, ssk, knit to end).
  4. Round 2: Knit all stitches.
  5. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until 48 stitches remain.

Foot:

  1. Continue knitting in pattern stripe sequence for the foot until the sock measures 2 inches less than desired total foot length.

Toe:

  1. Switch to light blue yarn.
  2. Begin toe decreases:
  3. Round 1: (Knit to 3 stitches before end of needle, k2tog, k1) around.
  4. Round 2: Knit all stitches.
  5. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until 16 stitches remain.
  6. Graft the remaining stitches using the Kitchener stitch.

Finishing:

Weave in all ends securely with your tapestry needle, and block lightly if desired.
