Materials:

  • Yarn: Medium weight in black and red
  • Needles: Size US 8 (5mm) knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Pom pom maker

Gauge:

20 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch

Dimensions:

Finished scarf length: Approximately 60 inches (152 cm)
Finished scarf width: Approximately 8 inches (20 cm)

Instructions:

Scarf:

With black yarn, cast on 40 stitches.

  1. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 4 rows.
  2. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) and work for 10 rows in red yarn.
  3. Begin bat motif chart:
    • For a symmetrical pattern, follow the bat chart, alternating black and red to create the bat design. Ensure both ends mirror each other with bats pointing towards the middle of the scarf.
  4. Continue in stockinette stitch (black) for 10 more rows.
  5. Switch to garter stitch and knit 4 rows to finish the bottom border.
  6. Bind off all stitches.

Pom Poms:

  1. Make four pom poms using the pom pom maker, alternating black and red yarn for a marbled effect.

Finishing:

  1. Attach one pom pom to each corner of the scarf using the tapestry needle.
  2. Weave in all loose ends with the tapestry needle.
  3. Block the scarf to even out the stitches and enhance the motif's appearance.
