Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (approx. 300 yards in total, 2 colors)
- 4.5mm hook
- 5 buttons (for closure)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Gauge:
17 stitches = 4 inches in double crochet
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Pattern Steps:
Back Panel:
- With Color A, ch 48.
- Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc across; turn (46 dc).
- Row 2: ch 3, dc in the next st and each st across; turn.
- Repeat Row 2 for 12 rows, transitioning to Color B in the last row.
- Continue with Color B for another 12 rows, alternating every 2 rows between Color A and Color B.
- Change to Color A and repeat for 12 more rows.
- Fasten off and set aside.
Front Panels (make 2):
- With Color A, ch 25.
- Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc across; turn (23 dc).
- Row 2: ch 3, dc in the next st and each st across; turn.
- Repeat Rows 2 and alternate colors as you did for the back panel, for the same total rows.
- Fasten off and set aside.
Sleeves (make 2):
- With Color A, ch 30.
- Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc across; turn (28 dc).
- Same as above, repeat for a total of 10 rows, alternating colors every 2 rows.
- Fasten off and set aside.
Assembly:
- Join shoulders of the front panels to the back panel using slip stitches.
- Attach the sleeves to the armholes, using slip stitches to join.
- For the hem, sc around the edges of the cardigan for a neat finish.
- On the right front panel, create buttonholes by chaining 2 and skipping 2 stitches to create spaces for the buttons.
- Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.
- Sew on buttons directly opposite the buttonholes.
