Colorful Knitted Hats
These vibrant hats are not just a fun project; they are practical too! Great for beginners, this pattern introduces basic knitting stitches while allowing you to express your creativity with colors.
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn in assorted colors (suggested colors: maroon, cream, brown, black, and pink)
- Knitting needles: US size 8 (5mm) or appropriate size for your yarn
- Stitch marker
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
Gauge:
18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Abbreviations:
- k: knit
- p: purl
- st(s): stitch(es)
- k2tog: knit two together (decrease)
- co: cast on
- bo: bind off
Instructions:
- Cast On: Begin by casting on 80 stitches using your chosen color (e.g., maroon). This will form the base of your hat.
- Ribbing: Work in ribbing of k2, p2 for 2 inches. This will create a stretchy brim for your hat.
- Body of Hat: Switch to stockinette stitch (knitting every round) and continue until the piece measures 7 inches from the cast-on edge.
- Colorwork (Optional): If you want to incorporate patterns: after 3 inches of stockinette, change the yarn to cream and purl two rows. Next, switch to brown, and follow the pattern seen in the image to create a fair isle design. Repeat this for about 2 inches.
- Decreasing: To shape the top of the hat, begin decreasing:
- Round 1: *k8, k2tog* around (72 stitches)
- Round 2: *k7, k2tog* around (64 stitches)
- Round 3: *k6, k2tog* around (56 stitches)
- Continue this pattern, decreasing 8 stitches every round until you have 8 stitches left.
- Finishing: Use the yarn needle to thread the remaining yarn through the last 8 stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
- Weave in any loose ends and trim excess yarn.
Final Touch:
For an added touch, consider adding a pom-pom to the top of your hat using leftover yarn!
Enjoy wearing your colorful hat or gifting it to someone special!
