Adorable Fox Baby Hat
This knitting pattern will guide you through making an adorable fox hat for a baby. Featuring a vibrant red color and distinct white ear accents, this hat is cozy and fun!
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in red (approximately 100 yards)
- Worsted weight yarn in white (approximately 25 yards)
- Size 8 US (5 mm) knitting needles
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Gauge
20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Abbreviations
- CO: Cast on
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- ST: Stitch
- K2TOG: Knit two stitches together (decreases by one stitch)
- SKP: Slip 1 stitch, knit the next stitch, then pass the slipped stitch over (a left-leaning decrease)
Instructions
Hat Body
- CO 72 stitches in red yarn.
- Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
- Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 1.5 inches.
- Change to stockinette stitch (knit all rounds) and knit until the hat measures 5 inches from the cast-on edge.
Decreasing for Top
- Begin decreasing: K6, K2TOG, repeat around. (63 stitches)
- Next round: Knit.
- K5, K2TOG, repeat around. (54 stitches)
- Next round: Knit.
- K4, K2TOG, repeat around. (45 stitches)
- Next round: Knit.
- K3, K2TOG, repeat around. (36 stitches)
- Next round: Knit.
- K2, K2TOG, repeat around. (27 stitches)
- Next round: Knit.
- K1, K2TOG, repeat around. (18 stitches)
- Next round: Knit.
- K2TOG around. (9 stitches)
Finishing the Hat
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Using a yarn needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Secure the yarn and weave in ends.
Fox Ears (Make 2)
- CO 10 stitches in white yarn.
- K2, P2 for 3 rows.
- Knit to form a triangle shape:
- K2TOG at the beginning of the next row until you have 2 stitches left.
- Final row: K2.
- Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold the ear in half and sew the outer side with red yarn, then attach them to the top of the hat.
Final Touches
- Weave in any remaining ends and trim excess yarn.
