Step-by-Step Instructions

Blanket (approx 24" x 24")

Note: The star stitch is worked over a multiple of 2 stitches + 1.

  1. Cast on: With MC, cast on 121 stitches.
  2. Garter stitch border (Rows 1-6): Knit all stitches for 6 rows.
  3. Row 7 (RS): Knit 3 (border), *k1, p1* repeat from * to * until 3 stitches remain, k3.
  4. Row 8 (WS): Knit 3, *p1, k1* repeat from * to * until 3 stitches remain, k3.
  5. Row 9 (RS - Star Stitch Setup): Knit 3, *k2tog but do not drop stitches from left needle, then knit the first stitch again, drop both stitches from left needle* (this creates a star stitch), repeat from * to * until 3 stitches remain, k3.
  6. Row 10 (WS): Knit 3, purl across, knit 3.
  7. Row 11 (RS): Knit 3, *k1, then work star stitch as in Row 9* repeat from * to * until 3 stitches remain, k3.
  8. Row 12 (WS): Knit 3, purl across, knit 3.
  9. Repeat pattern: Repeat Rows 9-12 for pattern, alternating colors every 4 rows (2 pattern repeats) in this order: MC, CC1, MC, CC2, MC, CC1, MC, CC2, MC. End with 4 rows of MC.
  10. Final border (Rows 13-18): Knit all stitches for 6 rows (garter stitch border). Bind off loosely.

Hat (Newborn)

  1. Cast on: With MC, cast on 60 stitches. Distribute evenly on DPNs (20 per needle). Join in the round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Ribbing: *K2, p2* repeat around for 6 rounds.
  3. Body: Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 2 inches.
  4. Crown Decreases:
    • Round 1: *K8, k2tog* repeat around (54 stitches).
    • Round 2: Knit.
    • Round 3: *K7, k2tog* (48 stitches).
    • Round 4: Knit.
    • Continue decreasing in this pattern (one less stitch between decreases each round) until 12 stitches remain.
  5. Finish: Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure.

Booties (Make 2)

  1. Cast on: With MC, cast on 30 stitches. Distribute on DPNs (10 per needle). Join in the round.
  2. Ribbing: *K1, p1* repeat around for 4 rounds.
  3. Foot: Work in stockinette stitch for 1.5 inches.
  4. Heel: Work back and forth on 15 stitches (half the stitches) for 10 rows in stockinette.
  5. Heel Turn:
    • Row 1 (RS): K9, ssk, k1, turn.
    • Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
    • Row 3: Slip 1, k6, ssk, k1, turn.
    • Row 4: Slip 1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn.
    • Continue until all stitches are worked. You will have 9 stitches on the needle.
  6. Gusset: Pick up and knit 7 stitches along the side of the heel, knit across the 15 instep stitches, pick up and knit 7 stitches along the other side of the heel. Distribute stitches evenly (approx 38 stitches total).
  7. Decrease Rounds:
    • Round 1: Knit.
    • Round 2: K1, ssk, knit until 3 stitches remain before the instep, k2tog, k1. Repeat for the other side.
    • Repeat these 2 rounds until 30 stitches remain.
  8. Toe: Work in stockinette for 1 inch.
  9. Toe Decreases:
    • Round 1: *K3, k2tog* repeat around (24 stitches).
    • Round 2: Knit.
    • Round 3: *K2, k2tog* (18 stitches).
    • Round 4: Knit.
    • Round 5: *K1, k2tog* (12 stitches).
  10. Finish: Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure.

Finishing
