Materials Needed
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in forest green and cream
- Needles: US 8 (5mm) knitting needles
- Gauge: 18 stitches x 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cast On: Begin by casting on 80 stitches using the forest green yarn. Ensure your stitches are evenly spaced on the needle.
- Base of the Backpack: Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 10 rows. This will create a sturdy base for your backpack.
- Body of the Backpack: Switch to stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) and continue for 50 rows. This will form the main body of the backpack.
- Introduce Cable Pattern: Change to the cream yarn and work the following cable pattern:
- Row 1: *K4, P4* repeat to end.
- Row 2: *P4, K4* repeat to end.
- Row 3: *C4B (Cable 4 Back), P4* repeat to end.
- Row 4: *P4, K4* repeat to end.
- Continue Cable Pattern: Repeat the cable pattern for a total of 20 rows. This will add texture and interest to the front of your backpack.
- Return to Stockinette Stitch: Switch back to the forest green yarn and work in stockinette stitch for another 50 rows. This will complete the body of the backpack.
- Bind Off: Once you have completed the final rows, bind off all stitches securely. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for seaming.
- Seam the Sides: Fold the piece in half, aligning the edges. Use a mattress stitch to seam the sides together, ensuring a neat finish.
- Create Straps: For the straps, knit two i-cords of 100 rows each using the forest green yarn. To knit an i-cord, cast on 4 stitches and knit every row, sliding the work to the other end of the needle after each row.
- Attach Straps: Securely attach the knitted i-cords to the top corners of the backpack. Make sure they are evenly spaced and firmly stitched for durability.
- Add Drawstring Closure: Finally, create a drawstring closure by threading a knitted cord through the top edge of the backpack. This will help keep your belongings secure.
Congratulations! You have successfully knitted your very own Lipa Backpack. Enjoy using it for your daily adventures or gifting it to a loved one!
