Knit Rustic Gradient Striped Mittens Free Pattern

Materials:

• Worsted weight yarn in four colors: dark gray, light beige, brown, medium gray.
• US Size 8 (5.0mm) double-pointed needles.
• Stitch marker.
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge:

16 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Instructions:

Cuff:

1. With dark gray yarn, cast on 36 stitches. Divide stitches evenly among 4 needles (9 stitches per needle). Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a marker to indicate the start of the round.
2. Knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for 2 inches.

Hand:

1. Change to light beige yarn. Knit 1 round.
2. Knit for 4 rounds.
3. Switch to medium gray yarn. Knit for 4 rounds.
4. Switch to brown yarn. Knit for 4 rounds.
5. Switch to light beige yarn. Knit for 4 rounds.
6. Switch to dark gray yarn. Knit for 4 rounds.

Thumb Gusset:

1. Continue with dark gray yarn. On the next round, knit across 1st needle, knit until 3 stitches remain on the 2nd needle, place a marker, make 1, knit 1, make 1, place a marker, knit remaining stitches on the needle until end of round.
2. Next round: knit all stitches.
3. Repeat these two rounds, increasing between markers, until there are 9 stitches between markers.
4. Place thumb gusset stitches on a holder and remove markers. Cast on 1 stitch over gap and continue with mitt body.

Decrease for Top:

1. Knit in pattern until mitten measures 8 inches from cuff (or desired length), ending at the start of a round.
2. Round 1: (Knit 2, knit 2 together) repeat to end of round.
3. Round 2: Knit all stitches.
4. Round 3: (Knit 1, knit 2 together) repeat to end of round.
5. Round 4: Knit all stitches.
6. Round 5: Knit 2 together across the round.
7. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close top. Fasten off.

Thumb:

1. Pick up the 9 thumb stitches from the holder and 1 stitch from the mitten body. Place marker and join to knit in the round.
2. Knit in the round with dark gray yarn until thumb measures 1.5 inches.
3. Knit 2 together around. Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining stitches, pull tight, and fasten off.

Finishing:

• Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle.
• Block if necessary to shape.
