Crochet Whimsical Retro Flap Backpack Free Pattern
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (approximately 300 yards total in two contrasting colors)
- 5.0 mm (H) crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Tapestry needle
- Button (large and colorful)
Gauge: 15 double crochets (dc) and 10 rows = 4 inches. Adjust hook size as necessary to match gauge.
Backpack Measurements: Approximately 12" wide x 10" tall when completed.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
Instructions:
Body of the Backpack
- With Color A, ch 38.
- Row 1: Sc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. (37 sc)
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, dc in the next st and in each st across. (37 dc)
- Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 10" tall.
Creating the Flap
- For the flap, ch 38 in Color B.
- Row 1: Sc in the second ch from the hook and each ch across. (37 sc)
- Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in each st across. (37 dc)
- Repeat Row 2 until it measures 6" tall.
Assembly
- Fold the body piece in half, and seam the sides together, leaving the top open for the flap.
- Attach the flap by sewing it to the top edge of the body, centered.
- Join the button on the front of the backpack beneath the flap for closure.
Straps
- With Color A, ch 80 for the first strap. Row 1: Sc in all ch across.
- Repeat the process for the second strap.
- Attach both straps to either side of the backpack, adjusting the length as needed.
Finishing: Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Optional: Add embellishments like patches or appliqués to personalize your backpack!
