Materials
- Aran/worsted weight yarn in grey, white, and black (approx. 700g)
- Crochet hook size 7mm
- Black safety eyes (optionally, you can use black yarn for embroidery)
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- dc - double crochet
- st - stitch
- sl st - slip stitch
- inc - increase
Instructions
Body
- Begin with grey yarn. Create a magic circle and work 6 sc into the circle. Join with a sl st. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (12 sts)
- Round 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st. (18 sts)
- Continue increasing following this pattern, placing an extra sc between the increases until the diameter is approximately 22 inches.
- Once the base is complete, continue working in dc in each stitch around without increasing until the body measures about 30 inches long.
Fin
- Using grey yarn, ch 21.
- Row 1: Dc in the fourth ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 3, dc across. Turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the fin measures about 8 inches wide.
- Fold the fin in half lengthwise and sew down the edge to make a fin shape. Attach to the top back of the cocoon.
Side Fins (Make 2)
- Using grey yarn, ch 11.
- Row 1: Dc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 3, dc across. Turn.
- Continue until piece measures about 5 inches wide.
- Fold in half, sew edges, and attach to sides of cocoon.
Teeth and Mouth
- Using white yarn, ch 31.
- Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 3, *sc, ch 3, sc in next st*, repeat across for spikes.
- Attach around the edge of the opening as shown.
Finishing Touches
- Attach safety eyes or embroider eyes using black yarn.
- Optionally, create gill details using black yarn by embroidering simple lines.
- Weave in all ends and ensure all parts are securely attached.
