Cozy Blue Beanie with Pom-Pom

Materials

• Yarn: Approximately 100 yards of bulky weight yarn (blue or your choice of color)
• Needles: Size 10 (6.0 mm) circular knitting needles, 16” length
• Ruler or measuring tape
• Scissors
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
• Optional: Pom-pom maker (if you don’t have one, you can create a pom-pom with cardboard)

Gauge

4 stitches = 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Gauge is important for getting the correct size, so it's recommended to knit a swatch before starting.

Instructions

1. Cast On: CO 50 stitches using the long-tail cast on method for a comfortable stretch at the brim.
2. Join in the Round: Carefully connect your stitches into a circle, making sure not to twist them. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.
3. Brim: (K1, P1) Ribbing
   • For the next 8 rounds, alternate between knitting 1 stitch and purling 1 stitch (k1, p1). This creates a stretchy and ribbed brim.
4. Body of the Hat:
   • After completing the brim, switch to knitting all stitches for the next 12 rounds (knit in stockinette stitch).
5. Decreasing:
   • For the next round, decrease by k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) around the entire hat. Now you should have 25 stitches.
   • Next, knit 1 round without decreasing.
   • In the following round, decrease again by k2tog around. You should now have 12 stitches.
   • Knit 1 more round, then decrease once more by k2tog around, leaving you with 6 stitches.
   • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 6 inches. Thread the cut end through the remaining stitches and pull to tighten. This will close off the top of your hat.
6. Create the Pom-Pom:
   • If using a pom-pom maker, follow the instructions to create a pom-pom using approximately 10 yards of yarn. If using cardboard, cut two circles, cut a smaller circle in the middle, wrap yarn around them until thick, then tie tightly and cut the loops.
   • Attach the pom-pom to the top of your beanie by sewing it securely with leftover yarn.
7. Finishing:
   • Weave in all ends using the yarn needle.
