Cozy Baby Sleep Hat Pattern

This pattern will guide you through creating a soft and cozy hat perfect for babies. It has a textured look and features ties that can be adjusted. This design is beginner-friendly and uses basic stitches, making it perfect for anyone new to knitting or crochet.

Materials

  • Soft baby yarn (worsted weight, about 100 yards)
  • 5 mm knitting needles or a 5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

Gauge is not critical for this project, but if you want to match the size exactly, aim for 4 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • BO = bind off

Instructions

Cast On

Cast on 40 stitches using your knitting needles or chain 40 stitches if crocheting.

Body of Hat

For knitting:

  1. Row 1: *k1, p1; repeat from * to end of the row.
  2. Row 2: *p1, k1; repeat from * to end of the row.
  3. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures 5 inches from the cast on edge.

For crocheting:

  1. Row 1: Chain 40, then turn and work hdc (half double crochet) in the back loops only across the row.
  2. Row 2: Chain 2, turn, hdc in the back loops only across the row.
  3. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 5 inches from the starting chain.

Crown Shaping

  1. For both knitting and crocheting:
  2. Decrease to 30 stitches: knit 1, k2tog across the row or in crochet, work 1 hdc, then hdc 2 together across.
  3. Next row: knit 1, k2tog across or in crochet, decrease hdc to 20 stitches.
  4. Continue this until you have about 10 stitches left.

Finishing

  1. Once you have around 10 stitches, cut the yarn, leaving a length to sew with.
  2. Thread the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
  3. Weave in all ends using a yarn needle.
  4. For ties, cut two 15-inch strands of yarn, fold in half, and attach to each side of the hat.

Congratulations! Your Cozy Baby Sleep Hat is complete and ready to keep your little one warm!
