Chunky Arm-Knitted Fingerless Mittens
Introduction
Welcome to your next cozy crafting project! In this tutorial, you will learn how to create warm and stylish chunky fingerless mittens using the fun and easy technique of arm knitting. These mittens are perfect for keeping your hands warm while allowing full finger dexterity, making them ideal for chilly days when you still want to use your phone or enjoy a hot drink. With just a few simple steps, you’ll have a beautiful pair of mittens that you can proudly say you made yourself!
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Super bulky yarn (choose your favorite color)
- Needles: Your arms (for arm knitting)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Measure Your Hand: Start by measuring around the widest part of your hand to determine the width of the mitten. This will help you ensure a comfortable fit.
- Cast On: Using your super bulky yarn, cast on 8 stitches using the arm knitting technique. To do this, create a slip knot and place it on your right arm. Use your left hand to pull the yarn from the ball and wrap it around your left arm to create the stitches. Repeat until you have 8 stitches on your right arm.
- Knit in Stockinette Stitch: Now, you will knit in stockinette stitch. This means you will alternate between knitting and purling:
- For the first row, use your right arm to knit the stitches by pulling the yarn through each stitch from the back to the front.
- For the second row, switch to purling by bringing the yarn to the front and pulling it through each stitch from the front to the back.
- Bind Off: Once you have reached the desired length, it’s time to bind off. To do this, knit the first two stitches, then use your left arm to pull the first stitch over the second stitch and off your arm. Continue this process until you have only one stitch left on your right arm. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it through the last stitch to secure it.
- Fold and Seam: Take your knitted piece and fold it in half lengthwise. Using the tail of yarn, seam the sides together, leaving a gap for the thumb. To create the thumb hole, leave about 2-3 inches unsewn from the top of the mitten. Make sure the seam is tight and secure.
- Weave in Loose Ends: Finally, use a yarn needle to weave in any loose ends from your cast-on and bind-off edges. This will give your mittens a clean finish.
Congratulations! You have now completed your very own pair of chunky arm-knitted fingerless mittens. Enjoy wearing them or gift them to a friend!
