Introducing the Woven Sand Tote

Carry your summer essentials in style with this textured, boho-inspired crochet tote. The combination of a simple mesh stitch and sturdy leather handles creates a modern, artisan look that's perfect for the beach or market. This free pattern is designed for beginners and yields a beautiful, airy bag that feels both handmade and high-end.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (100% mercerized cotton; 100g/186yds) in 2 skeins of 'Linen' (MC) and 1 skein of 'Natural' (CC)
  • Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers (optional), strong thread or thin leather cord for attaching handles
  • Hardware: Two pre-made leather handles (approximately 20 inches long)

Gauge

14 sts x 8 rows = 4 inches in mesh stitch pattern (ch1, sk1, dc). Adjust hook size if necessary to match gauge.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Panel (Make 2)

Note: The bag is worked flat in two panels (front and back) and then seamed together. The mesh stitch creates a beautiful, airy texture. The leather handles are attached after assembly.

Foundation Chain: With MC, ch 37.

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as first dc), *ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch; rep from * across. (18 dc, 17 ch-1 spaces)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, *ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * across, ending with dc in top of turning ch.

Rows 3-30: Repeat Row 2 until piece measures approximately 14 inches from beginning. Fasten off.

Assembly

Place the two panels with right sides together. Using MC and a tapestry needle, whip stitch the bottom and side seams together, leaving the top open. Turn right side out.

Top Edging

With RS facing, join CC with a sl st to the top edge. Work 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-1 space around the top opening. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Leather Handles

Position the two pre-made leather handles evenly on the top edge of the bag, about 3 inches from each side seam. Using a tapestry needle and strong thread or thin leather cord, securely stitch the handles to the bag through the top edging and into the fabric. Ensure they are firmly attached by making several passes through each attachment point.

Finishing

Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Gently block the bag if desired to even out the stitches and shape the bag. To block, dampen the bag lightly and shape it flat, allowing it to dry completely.
