Anonymous July 28, 2026

Cozy Up with The Ember Glow Fingerless Mitts

Wrap your hands in the warmth of a crackling fire with these richly textured fingerless mitts, featuring a unique woven-like stitch pattern. This quick 60-minute project is perfect for using up worsted-weight yarn scraps and makes a thoughtful handmade gift. The alternating stripes of creamy off-white and deep cranberry red create a cozy, rustic, autumnal aesthetic that evokes the feeling of a warm fire on a cold day.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) yarn in two contrasting colors (Color A: 50g, Color B: 50g). Sample uses Lion Brand Wool-Ease in 'Fisherman' (A) and 'Cranberry' (B).
  • Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Gauge: 14 stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches in pattern stitch (after blocking)
  • Other: Yarn needle for weaving ends, scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes

  • Mitts are worked flat from the wrist up, then seamed.
  • The pattern stitch creates a dense, woven texture.
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.

Pattern Stitch (Multiple of 2 + 1)

  • Row 1 (RS): With Color A, ch 1, sc in first st, *sk next st, dc in next st, working behind the dc just made, dc in the skipped st (cross stitch made)*, repeat from * to * across to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
  • Row 2 (WS): With Color A, ch 1, sc in first st, *sk next st, dc in next st, working in front of the dc just made, dc in the skipped st*, repeat from * to * across to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
  • Row 3: Change to Color B, repeat Row 1.
  • Row 4: With Color B, repeat Row 2.
  • Repeat Rows 1-4 for pattern.

Mitt (Make 2)

  1. With Color A, ch 27.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (26 sc) Turn.
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, work Row 1 of pattern stitch across to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, work Row 2 of pattern stitch across to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
  5. Row 4: Change to Color B, ch 1, sc in first st, work Row 3 of pattern stitch across to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
  6. Row 5: With Color B, ch 1, sc in first st, work Row 4 of pattern stitch across to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
  7. Continue in pattern, alternating colors every 2 rows, until piece measures approximately 6 inches from the beginning, ending with a WS row. Do not fasten off.

Thumb Opening

  1. Next Row (RS): Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, ch 5 (skip next 5 sts for thumb opening), sc in next 6 sts, work pattern across remaining 9 sts. Turn.
  2. Next Row (WS): Work pattern across all sts, working 1 sc in each chain of the thumb opening. (26 sts)
  3. Continue in pattern for 2 more rows (1 repeat of Color B, then 1 repeat of Color A). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Finishing

  1. Fold mitt in half with RS together. Using the long tail, whipstitch the side seam from the wrist edge up to the thumb opening. Then, stitch the top edge closed. Weave in all ends. Repeat for second mitt.

Edging (optional)

With Color A, sc evenly around the wrist edge and thumb opening to create a neat finish.

Your Ember Glow Fingerless Mitts are now complete! Enjoy the cozy, textured warmth they provide, and feel proud of your handmade creation.
