This free pattern guides you through creating a pair of slippers that feel like a warm hug for your feet. The magic of felting transforms your knitting into a dense, warm, and sturdy fabric that molds perfectly to your feet. Whether you're a seasoned knitter or a brave beginner looking for a rewarding project, these slippers are the perfect way to keep your toes toasty all winter long.
Materials Needed
Yarn
- Approximately 200-250 yards of worsted weight (aran/10ply) 100% wool yarn (for felting). Shown in 'Mountain Heather' (a heathered grey-purple) and 'Cranberry' (a deep burgundy).
- Important: The yarn must be 100% wool (not superwash treated) for the felting process to work. Look for yarns labeled as "feltable" or "non-superwash."
Needles & Notions
- US 8 (5.0 mm) 16-inch circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round.
- Stitch markers (at least 2)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and sewing
- Small, dark wooden buttons (2 buttons, approximately ½ inch diameter)
- Pillowcase or mesh laundry bag for felting
- Old pair of jeans or towels (for agitation during felting)
- Shoe forms or your own feet for shaping after felting
Gauge
18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch before felting. Gauge is not critical due to felting, but consistency is key for even sizing.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Sizes & Abbreviations
Sizes: Women's S (M, L) to fit US shoe sizes 6-7 (8-9, 10-11). The slippers will felt and shrink significantly, so they are knit much larger than the final size.
Abbreviations:
- CO – cast on
- K – knit
- P – purl
- K2tog – knit two together
- SSK – slip, slip, knit (slip next two stitches knitwise, one at a time, then knit them together through the back loop)
- St(s) – stitch(es)
- Rnd(s) – round(s)
- M1 – make one (pick up the bar between stitches and knit it through the back loop)
- PM – place marker
- SM – slip marker
- BOR – beginning of round marker
- RS – right side
- WS – wrong side
Pattern Notes: The slipper is knit from the toe up in the round. The strap is knit separately and sewn on after felting. The entire slipper is felted in a washing machine to create a dense, warm fabric.
Slipper (Make 2)
Toe
- CO 8 sts using the magic loop method or distribute over 2 DPNs (4 sts per needle).
- Rnd 1: K all sts.
- Rnd 2 (Increase Round): *K1, M1, K to last st on needle, M1, K1; repeat from * to end of round. (4 sts increased – you now have 12 sts)
- Repeat Rnd 2 until you have 40 (44, 48) sts total. Divide sts evenly over 4 DPNs (10, 11, 12 sts per needle) or continue using magic loop.
Foot
- Work even in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the piece measures 7 (7.5, 8) inches from the cast-on edge, or until it reaches the base of your big toe when tried on (remember it will shrink!).
Heel Flap
- Work back and forth in rows on half the stitches (20, 22, 24 sts) for the heel flap, leaving the other half on hold for the instep.
- Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, K to end.
- Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, P to end.
- Repeat these 2 rows for 2 (2.5, 3) inches, ending with a WS row.
Turn Heel
- Row 1 (RS): K 12 (13, 14), SSK, K1, turn. (You have worked 12, 13, or 14 stitches, then decreased, then knit 1 more stitch)
- Row 2 (WS): P 5, P2tog, P1, turn.
- Row 3 (RS): K to 1 st before the gap (the gap is where you turned previously), SSK (knit the st before the gap and the st after the gap together), K1, turn.
- Row 4 (WS): P to 1 st before the gap, P2tog, P1, turn.
- Repeat Rows 3-4 until all heel sts are worked. You will have 12 (14, 16) sts remaining on the needle.
Gusset
- With the RS facing, pick up and knit 10 (11, 12) sts along the left side of the heel flap. Place marker (BOR).
- Pick up and knit 10 (11, 12) sts along the right side of the heel flap. You now have 20 (22, 24) instep sts and 32 (36, 40) heel/gusset sts.
Shape Gusset
- Rnd 1 (Decrease Round): K to last 3 sts of heel/gusset, K2tog, K1; K across instep sts; on second heel/gusset section, K1, SSK, K to end.
- Rnd 2: K all sts.
- Repeat Rnds 1-2 until you have 20 (22, 24) sts on each side (40, 44, 48 sts total).
Leg
- Work even in stockinette stitch for 1.5 (2, 2) inches.
Cuff
- Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 inch.
- Bind off loosely in pattern.
Strap (Make 2)
- CO 5 sts.
- Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 6 (6.5, 7) inches.
- Bind off.
Finishing Before Felting
- Weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle.
- Sew a small button to the outside of each slipper, about 1 inch down from the cuff edge, centered over the instep. The strap will be buttoned after felting, so position the button where it will align with the strap later.
Felting Process
- Place both slippers in a pillowcase or mesh laundry bag. Secure the opening with a knot or zipper.
- Add a pair of old jeans or towels to the washing machine to increase agitation. This helps the felting process work faster and more evenly.
- Set the machine to a hot water wash, small load, with a small amount of detergent (about 1 tablespoon).
- Run the cycle. Check the slippers after the cycle. If they are not felted enough (still too loose or stitch definition is too clear), run them through another hot cycle. Repeat until desired density is achieved. This may take 2-4 cycles depending on your machine and yarn.
- Important: Do not let the slippers go through the spin cycle if you want to shape them – remove them while still wet.
- While still damp, shape the slippers over your feet or a shoe form to ensure a perfect fit. Gently pull and smooth the fabric to create a rounded toe and defined heel.
- Let them air dry completely (this may take 24-48 hours). Do not put them in the dryer.
Final Assembly
- Once dry, sew the strap to the outside of the slipper, positioning it so it can be buttoned over the instep. The strap should cross the instep and button onto the button you sewed earlier.
- Trim any loose fibers with small scissors.
Congratulations! You've created a pair of custom-fit, cozy felted Mary Jane slippers that will keep your feet warm and stylish for years to come. Enjoy the handmade comfort!
