Free Pattern: The Hearthstone Crescent Rug

Introduction

Welcome to the Hearthstone Crescent Rug — a project that is genuinely made for someone who has never held a crochet hook before. It is a cozy half-circle rug worked in thick, forgiving bulky yarn, which means your stitches are big and easy to see, and small wobbles disappear into the plush texture. The finished rug looks like a warm oatmeal semicircle with a terracotta border, and it feels dense, nubby, and wonderfully soft underfoot. Because it is worked flat in simple turned rows, you never have to juggle a tube or count in a spiral, so you can build confidence one row at a time. By the end you will have a 36-inch-wide rug that hugs a doorway or hearth beautifully — and a whole new skill.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Bulky (weight 5) acrylic or cotton-blend yarn, approximately 600–700 yards (550–640 m) total. The sample uses a warm oatmeal base with a terracotta border (about 550–640 yards oatmeal and 50–60 yards terracotta).
  • Crochet hook: J/10 (6.0 mm) crochet hook.
  • Stitch markers: At least 4 removable stitch markers (or safety pins, or short scraps of contrasting yarn).
  • Tapestry needle: A blunt-tipped yarn needle with an eye large enough for bulky yarn, for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors: Any sharp pair of craft scissors.
  • Measuring tape or ruler: For checking gauge and the finished size.
  • Finished size: Approximately 36 inches (91 cm) wide at the flat straight edge and 18 inches (46 cm) deep at the center.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

Every abbreviation used in this pattern is listed below and explained in plain English. You do not need to know anything before you start — read this list once, and refer back to it as often as you like.

  • ch – chain. Make a loop with the yarn and pull a new loop through it. Each loop you pull through is one chain. (This is how you start.)
  • st / sts – stitch / stitches. A "stitch" is one finished loop-and-post unit in your fabric. "Sts" just means more than one.
  • hdc – half double crochet. Yarn over (wrap the yarn around your hook once), insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (you now have 3 loops on the hook), yarn over again, and pull through all 3 loops at once. One hdc made.
  • sc – single crochet. Insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over again, and pull through both loops. One sc made.
  • sl st – slip stitch. Insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull that loop straight through the loop already on your hook. No extra height — it is a joining stitch.
  • FPhdc – front post half double crochet. Yarn over, insert the hook from front to back around the post (the vertical body) of the indicated stitch — not into the top of it — yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook. This pushes the stitch forward and makes a raised ridge.
  • BPhdc – back post half double crochet. Yarn over, insert the hook from back to front around the post of the indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook. This pushes the stitch backward and makes a recessed ridge.
  • 2 hdc in the same stitch – an increase. Work two complete half double crochet stitches into one single stitch, which adds one stitch to your row and makes the rug wider.
  • yarn over – wrap the working yarn over the hook from back to front, ready to pull through.
  • turn – flip your work over so the back faces you, ready to work the next row.
  • fasten off – cut the yarn leaving a 6-inch tail, then pull the tail all the way through the last loop on your hook to lock it.
  • weave in ends – thread a yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and sew it back and forth through the back of the fabric so it is hidden and secure.
  • blocking – dampening the finished piece and pinning it flat to dry so it holds a neat shape.

Gauge

Gauge: 12 stitches and 8 rows in half double crochet = 4 inches (10 cm).

Why gauge matters: Gauge is simply how big your stitches come out. If your stitches are bigger than the pattern's, your rug will be wider and deeper than 36 by 18 inches; if they are smaller, it will be smaller. For a rug this is not critical — it will still work — but checking gauge tells you what size you will actually get, and it lets you adjust by going up or down one hook size.

How to make a gauge swatch: With your J/10 (6.0 mm) hook and bulky yarn, chain 18. Work 1 hdc in the 3rd chain from the hook and in each chain across (16 hdc). Turn. Work 10 more rows of hdc, chaining 2 at the start of each row and turning. Lay the swatch flat and measure the middle 4 inches across and 4 inches up. Count the stitches across those 4 inches and the rows up those 4 inches. If you get about 12 stitches and 8 rows, you are on target. If you get more stitches, your tension is tight — try a larger hook. If you get fewer, your tension is loose — try a smaller hook.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Count every row out loud. The stitch count in parentheses at the end of each row is your safety net. If your count does not match, undo that row and try again — it is much easier to fix one row than to discover a problem twenty rows later.
  • Use stitch markers at both ends. Place a marker in the very first stitch and the very last stitch of each row. The increases happen exactly there, and markers stop you from accidentally working into the turning chain.
  • Do not pull your yarn tight. Keep a relaxed, even tension. Tight stitches make a stiff, curling rug and make it hard to insert your hook. If your hook squeaks and fights you, loosen up.
  • The chain 2 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch. Work your first hdc into the first actual stitch, not into the chain. This keeps your edges straight.
  • Work in good light and take breaks. Bulky yarn is heavy on the hands. Every 15 minutes, stretch your fingers and wrists.
  • Keep your work flat. As the half-circle grows, lay it on a table now and then. If the curved edge starts to ruffle, your increases are too close together; if it cups upward, you have missed an increase.

Step-by-Step Instructions

How this rug is built: The rug is worked flat in turned rows, starting at the center of the straight edge and growing outward. You increase at both ends of every row to create the half-circle shape. The chain 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. Every row is written out individually below — nothing is skipped and nothing is abbreviated.

Border

Border: Do not turn. Work 1 round of single crochet evenly around the entire outer curved edge and along the straight edge, working 3 sc in each corner to keep the edge flat. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Optional Texture Accent

Optional texture accent: Work a surface slip stitch or a row of FPhdc/BPhdc along the curved edge in a contrasting color for a raised border.

Assembly and Finishing

Seaming: There is no seaming in this rug — it is worked in one continuous piece from the straight edge outward, so nothing needs to be joined together.

Weaving in ends: Thread each yarn tail onto your tapestry needle. Turn the rug to the wrong side and sew the tail back and forth through the backs of 6–8 nearby stitches, changing direction once or twice so it cannot pull loose. Trim the tail close to the fabric. Do this for the starting tail, the fasten-off tail, and any tails from color changes.

Blocking: Lay the rug flat on a clean towel or blocking mat. Lightly mist it with water from a spray bottle until it is damp but not soaking. Smooth the curved edge into a neat semicircle with your hands, and pin the corners and the curve in place with rustproof
