Diamond Lace Socks

Materials

  • Yarn: 100g of DK-weight yarn in lavender (or desired color)
  • Needles: Set of 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) size US 5 (3.75 mm)
  • Stitch Marker
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

  • CO: Cast On
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • K2tog: Knit two together
  • SKP: Slip one stitch, knit one stitch, pass the slipped stitch over
  • YO: Yarn Over
  • St: Stitch
  • Rnd: Round

Instructions

Sock Cuff

  1. Using the DPNs, CO 60 stitches. Distribute stitches evenly across three needles (20 stitches per needle).
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
  3. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 inches (5 cm).

Leg

  1. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every stitch) and knit for 3 inches (7.5 cm).
  2. Begin diamond lace pattern as follows:
    1. **Round 1:** K2, *YO, K2tog, K2, YO, K2tog, K2, repeat from * to end.
    2. **Round 2:** K all stitches.
    3. **Round 3:** K2, *K1, YO, K2tog, K4, YO, K2tog, K1, repeat from * to end.
    4. **Round 4:** K all stitches.
  3. Repeat rounds 1-4 until the leg measures 6 inches (15 cm) from the cuff.

Heel Flap

  1. Work heel flap on the first 30 stitches (beginning from the first needle).
  2. Row 1: *Sl 1, K1, repeat from * to end.
  3. Row 2: Sl 1, P to end.
  4. Repeat these two rows for a total of 14 rows, until the heel flap measures 2.5 inches (6.5 cm).

Turn Heel

  1. Row 1: K17, K2tog, K1, turn.
  2. Row 2: Sl 1, P6, P2tog, P1, turn.
  3. Row 3: K7, K2tog, K1, turn.
  4. Row 4: Sl 1, P8, P2tog, P1, turn.
  5. Row 5: K9, K2tog, K1, turn.
  6. Row 6: Sl 1, P10, P2tog, P1, turn.
  7. Row 7: K11, K2tog, K1, turn.
  8. Row 8: Sl 1, P12, P2tog, P1, turn.

Gusset

  1. Pick up 15 stitches along one side of the heel flap, knit across the next 30 stitches for the instep, and pick up 15 stitches along the other side of the heel flap. You will have a total of 60 stitches again.
  2. Now, work this round:
  3. K across the instep, K2tog at the beginning of the round and K2tog at the end of the round.
  4. Repeat this until 48 stitches remain, making sure to balance the decrease evenly throughout the rows.

Foot

  1. Continue to knit in the round until the foot measures approximately 7 inches (18 cm) from the back of the heel or your desired length.

Toe

  1. Begin decreasing for the toe:
  2. Round 1: K4, K2tog, repeat to end.
  3. Round 2: K all stitches.
  4. Repeat these two rounds until 12 stitches remain.
  5. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the toe.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Ensure all seams and decreases are neat and tidy.
  2. Block the socks lightly to shape them.
