  3. Continue alternating colors (6 rnds cream, 4 rnds black) until the leg measures approximately 8 inches or desired length.

Heel Flap

  1. Using cream yarn, work across half the sts (24 sts) for the heel flap.
  2. Work back and forth in rows as follows:
    • Row 1: *Sl1, k1; repeat from * across.
    • Row 2: Sl1, purl to end.
  3. Repeat these two rows for a total of 24 rows.

Turn Heel

  1. Continue with cream yarn and turn the heel as follows:
    • Row 1: k14, ssk, k1, turn.
    • Row 2: Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
    • Row 3: Sl1, k6, ssk, k1, turn.
    • Row 4: Sl1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn.
  2. Continue in this manner until all sts are worked, ending with a purl row. You should have 14 sts left.

Gusset

  1. With the right side facing, pick up and knit 12 sts along the edge of the heel flap. Place a marker to denote the beginning of the round.
  2. Knit across the 24 sts of the instep in stripe pattern (continuing the alternating colors).
  3. Pick up and knit 12 sts along the other edge of the heel flap. Knit across half of the heel sts.

Foot

  1. Continue knitting in the round, maintaining stripe pattern, until the foot measures approximately 7 inches from the back of the heel, or 2 inches less than the desired total length of the foot.

Toe

  1. Switch to the black yarn and proceed as follows for the toe decrease:
    • Rnd 1: *k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts on needle, k2tog, k1; repeat from * for each needle.
    • Rnd 2: Knit all sts.
  2. Repeat these two rounds until 8 sts remain.
  3. Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining sts and pull tight to close.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all ends.
  2. Block gently to shape.

Your cozy striped socks are ready to wear! Enjoy the warmth and softness throughout the chilly days.
