Introduction

Welcome to the world of cozy crafting! In this blog post, we will guide you through creating your very own Chunky Knit Drawstring Bags. These bags are not only functional but also add a pop of color to your daily routine. Using super bulky yarn and basic stitches, this project is perfect for beginners looking for a quick and satisfying knit. Whether you choose to make a vibrant orange bag or a striped masterpiece in red, grey, and white, you’ll love the texture and style of these handmade bags!

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Super bulky yarn in the following colors:
    • Orange
    • Red
    • Grey
    • White
  • Needles: US size 15 (10mm) knitting needles
  • Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cast On: Begin by casting on 40 stitches using the long tail cast on method. Ensure your stitches are not too tight, as this will affect the bag's opening.
  2. Ribbing: Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 4 rows. This means you will knit one stitch, then purl one stitch, alternating across the row. Repeat this for a total of 4 rows. This creates a stretchy top edge for your bag.
  3. Stockinette Stitch: Switch to stockinette stitch by knitting one row and purling the next. Continue this pattern for a total of 10 inches. Remember, stockinette stitch is achieved by alternating between knitting and purling rows.
  4. Striping (Optional): If you are making the striped bag, alternate colors every 4 rows. Start with grey, then switch to red, followed by white, and repeat this sequence. If you are making the solid orange bag, simply continue with the orange yarn for the entire 10 inches.
  5. Bind Off: Once you reach the desired length, bind off your stitches loosely to ensure the top of the bag remains flexible. To bind off, knit the first two stitches, then use the left needle to lift the first stitch over the second and off the needle. Continue this until all stitches are bound off.
  6. Seaming: Fold the knitted piece in half, aligning the edges. Use the mattress stitch to seam the sides together. This stitch creates an invisible seam, ensuring your bag looks neat and professional.
  7. Create the Drawstring: You can create a drawstring by knitting an I-cord or using a crochet chain with matching yarn. The drawstring should be approximately 30 inches long. To knit an I-cord, cast on 3 stitches and knit every row until you reach the desired length, then bind off.
  8. Weave the Drawstring: Take your drawstring and weave it through the top edge of the bag. Make sure it goes through all the stitches evenly to allow for a smooth closure.
  9. Finish: Pull the drawstring to close the bag and tie a knot to secure it. Your chunky knit drawstring bag is now complete and ready to use!
